Leadership: Change your strategy not your principles

Regardless of whether you are a manager or leader in a large corporate, owner of a SME, self-employed or an employee it is impossible to escape the current global recessionary climate.

Business is feeling the heat and  “things are tough but we are doing what we can to keep pushing ahead” is a common experience. The range of adjustments and changes range from cutting costs to restructuring and redundancies to managing stakeholder expectations.  At an individual level, feelings of anxiety and panic, fear of the future, job insecurity also prevail. Hone Harawira’s Leadership Challenge

Regardless of whether you are a Hone Harawira supporter or not, the current situation raises some key leadership questions.    When you are in a leadership position, where do you draw the line?  Do you speak “your truth” because you see that as being absolutely critical – the voice of your supporters who put you in the position of power and trust in the first place or do you keep quiet because there is a bigger issue at play such as being loyal and in integrity with your own party?   Continue reading

13 tips for starting that book still inside of you

Launch Pictures 052I get asked quite frequently-  by people wanting to write their book  –  what helped me write   “Get your groove back.”   Here are some tips that might help you if you are thinking about getting started on your book or e-book:

1) Passion helps!  Write what you have passion for, what you are excited about and what gives you a buzz and or sense of meaning and purpose. Write what you feel is inside of you that needs to come out.
2) Commit your thoughts to writing.  If you feel you have a story or message to share, don’t leave it in an amorphous thought phase only.  Translate it into written words – whether you commit it to paper, word document, whatever.
3) Have a draft working structure. Start your book along the lines of this draft structure knowing that this will change as your thoughts, story and message evolves. Continue reading

What stops you having that courageous conversation?

women in meeting

Whether you are in a leadership role or not, from time to time we all have to gear up and have those courageous conversations – the ones that we tend to avoid.  And therein lies the trouble.  The more we avoid these, the bigger the issue gets or the more it festers. As one senior leader put it, “if something isn’t feeling right, nine times out of ten, it isn’t!”  And this means some conversation needs to take place –whatever the scenario and whoever your situation is with.

We all have different “brakes’ that we put on. This stops us from tackling what needs to be tackled.  Some examples of thinking that get in the way include – “I will destroy the existing harmony” (what harmony?  The current “walk on egg-shells” variety? ) or “if I ignore it, it will just go away” (with denial, the issue rarely just disappears) or genuinely not having the skills or confidence to deal with it ( These can be learnt).  Continue reading

Managing disappointment in business

The natural inclination for humans including leaders is to aspire, to want, to achieve.  Whether this is in one’s job, career, business, relationship and or sporting and community life, we are motivated by the pull of what is appealing and rewarding to us.  These hopes and desires keep us motivated and energized.

But we don’t always get what we want.  Even for those in leadership positions, the promotion or job slips away, the relationship one had banked everything on turns sour and even our health, which we had taken for granted suddenly reveals to us our vulnerability. Continue reading

Your Leadership Mantra for 2013

focus, values, mission
Some years back my colleague sent me an article by Guy Kawasaki’s  on mantra vs. mission statement.  Guy, a former Apple Evangelist and now a Venture Capitalist, is an ardent supporter of individuals and organizations having mantras rather than mission statements. It was no surprise that my knowing colleague had sent this to me.  The idea of having a mantra for the New Year appealed almost instantaneously!  My Indian DNA quite relished this concept and could contemplate the many possibilities. A twitter of a life!

Perhaps life is one big tweet!

We have our families with our distinct ways (bio and interest areas), we connect with like minded people (follow) and attract others (followers).

We communicate and engage regularly with our family (tweets) and we get our message passed on – especially if it resonates (re-tweeted).

We make new friends and our circle of meaning, engagement  and influence grows.  ( We continue tweeting).

Life is too boundless to imitate twitter. Twitter is obviously imitating life!

Activating your human superpowers

This edited post is by guest blogger Amanda Fleming. The purpose of this article is to present you with an expanded way of thinking and feeling about yourself, and to offer a view of what the present ‘moment’ in our unfolding process as individual and species truly and realistically offers if enough of us only knew how to use it well.  I believe we have the power to co-create a future worthy of our greatest aspirations by allowing ourselves to be guided by our deepest yearnings.  This power is the great gift it is to be human and alive today.  It’s time to clean the lenses of our interior and see our world anew.   Continue reading

Where does your consciousness reside?

For a long time, my loved ones were telling me that I should consider finding myself a “better” place to live. One that was more reflective of me rather than the smallish place I was living in.  The thing was it worked because it was small – easy upkeep, convenient to all the places that mattered to me including a short drive to the CBD and a brief walk to my favourite, local café!   The café sustained me while I was writing my book.    But they were right in that it precluded doing a number of other simple, joyful things such as sitting around with friends on the patio with sun, colourful pot plants and being able to enjoy the outdoors in a restful way. They called it my working pad.

Well last month – the unexpected happen! Continue reading
